The app provides a customizable widget that can be added to any home screen. Users can start by pressing "menu," then "add," selecting "widgets," and finally choosing Car Widget from the list. The widget offers a 4x4 layout with options for 4, 6, or 8 large shortcuts, making it visually accessible and user-friendly. The layout is not limited to just one screen; users retain access to all other screens of their home launcher, thus maintaining overall functionality.

Customization is a significant aspect of Car Widget. Users can modify the background color, opacity, font size, and color, as well as the tint of the icons. Users can also route calls to the speaker or enable auto answer features, although the latter is experimental.

The permissions required for the app are designed to enhance its functionality. Car Widget requests access to CALL_PHONE for direct call shortcuts, WAKE_LOCK to prevent the phone from sleeping, and WRITE_SETTINGS to adjust brightness settings. It also requires ACCESS_WIFI_STATE and CHANGE_WIFI_STATE to manage Wi-Fi connections, along with BLUETOOTH and BLUETOOTH_ADMIN permissions to control Bluetooth settings. Additionally, the app has a backup and restore functionality that modifies or deletes content in USB storage.

Users can enhance their experience further by enabling the "Stay awake" option found under Settings -> Applications -> Development, which helps prevent the phone from sleeping while in use. Landscape mode is supported, although not all launchers allow this feature. If necessary, users can switch to a different launcher that supports landscape orientation, such as LauncherPro or ADW.
